Water Practice

When registering for water practice, please indicate which color category you are in:

Yellow/Recreational (Primary Coach Loc)- Recreational paddlers enjoy the social aspect of dragon boating, combined with a weekly workout. There is no minimum time commitment at this level - recreational paddlers can attend practices at their leisure. This may be an introduction for some but can include people who have paddled for years but just do not want to put too much time into the sport (hopefully, during this period you will CONVERT)

Orange/Competitive (Primary Coach Bao)- Competitive paddlers commit to a minimum of 1 paddling session per week for 75-80% of the season. Competitive paddlers undergo a more rigorous workout and review technical aspects of 'the stroke'. Assessments will be "highly recommended" to keep track of progress. Paddlers at this level are more serious about paddling, but have time limitations during the week or are in training to progress to the Premiere level.

Red/Premiere (Primary Coach Minh)- Premiere paddlers commit to a minimum of 2 paddling sessions per week. Monthly assessments and weekly land training regimens are required. Premiere paddlers must meet minimum assessment criteria. Technical tweaking, finesse, and power will be heavily emphasized.

These categories are NOT intended to discourage any paddler. Instead, we hope they encourage and motivate members to become better paddlers. If you have any questions, feel free to email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Practice Policies:

  • Bring sunblock and plenty of fluids such as water or a sports drink. However, please do not leave your bottles in the boat, on the dock or in the parking lot for others to clean up.

  • Helping load the boats before and after practice is a GROUP effort. The process is faster and safer when everyone lends a hand.

  • If you cannot attend practice, please remove your name from the sign-up list. Space is limited so removing your name allows someone else to take your spot.

  • Coaches may cancel a practice if weather conditions become risky for paddlers. Rain is not a reason to cancel practice, but heavy lightning is. We will try to contact everyone about cancellations, but it's ultimately the paddler's responsibility to check on the status of practices.

  • The first two water practices are FREE for guests. After the trial period, non-members can purchase a Membership, or pay $5 per practice. If you join at a later date, prior payments will be deducted from your membership fee. Visit Membership and Guest Trial for more information.
