Austin festival reflections -
Many thanks to coaches Albert, Bao, Jeff, Loc for putting the team first in their efforts to help Houston Heat defend their title in Austin. They sacrifice their own practice time in the boat to steer and coach a team that lost many experienced paddlers from last year's race and was a team looking for its own identity. The coaches made sure that we had the opportunity to practice every weekend and put in extra time to have the boats in the water before team members arrived. The coaches came up with a strategy, fine tuned it, and made a bold decision in the finals that almost pulled off a stunning upset against a much superior Freescale team, who we also congratulate for their dedication to promoting the sport in Austin. The fact that Houston Heat placed 2nd at the end of a long, grueling day is a testament to coaches that made us believe in ourselves and most certainly brought out the best in everyone. To those of you that competed in hostile territory for the first time, give yourselves a big pat on the back bacause your presence in the boat was invaluable and we hope this experience will challenge you to become better paddlers.
Ann, we would be lost without your efforts as event leader - thanks to you, Quynh, Mas and all the other volunteers for helping to make Austin another enjoyable experience for Houston Heat. And remember, what happens in Austin stays in Austin
