Hello Paddlers,

So we hope you can join us!

Also, it's time for our 2008 superlatives list --  just some fun awards handed out to our favorite paddlers -  YOU!  You help make the decision!  (You have to be a registered member of the website to be able log-in to vote. )

Houston Heat Takes Home the Gulf Cup!
Monday, 20 October 2008

2008gulfcoastcup.jpgAfter an exciting weekend of racing at the 2008 Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta in Sugar Land, TX, the Houston Heat Orange team clenched the grand prize, the 2008 Gulf Cup, with an amazing showing in the last event -- the 1000 meter race.  With several races ending in photo finishes, Houston Heat was able to edge out fellow Texas team, the Austin Coolers, for the overall win and coveted dragon trophy.  It is the first win for the new team in its third season.

Houston Heat Yellow also had an impressive weekend.  With a make-up mixed with paddlers of varied experience, some who have never paddled before, Houston Heat Yellow managed to surprise their competitors, including their own teammates in the Orange team, during the two day event.

Congratulations!  Race results and details to come!

Member Spotlight for October: Kristen Wollard

Our Female Member Spotlight for October is:

Kristen Wollard!

k&c_october01.jpgName: Kristen Wollard
Age: (optional) 28
Hometown: Westlake Village, CA (I guess)
Houston Heat Member since: The Beginning!! (I think that was 2006)
How did you hear about Houston Heat?  I don’t remember how I heard about the HH kickoff specifically, so let’s give Laura credit.
What do you do when you're not dragon boating? (i.e., hobbies, sports, cross-training, leisure, work, etc):  Run, bike, outrigger canoe, kayak, read
When and how did you start dragon boating?  In 2006 on the Houston Rowing Club DB team (Laura made it sound so fun!)
What do you like best about dragon boating? The people and the workout
Favorite dragon boat experience so far:  I don’t know, I love them all!  The Woodlands event was great!
The best thing about being a member of Houston Heat:  I don’t want to be the deadweight in the boat, so it motivates me to work out!
Top tip you'd give new paddlers: Keep your eyes up so you can stay in sync
Anything else you'd like to share?  I hate stretching (not with the group, just in general as workout prep – the group makes it better).
