On April 30th the Houston Heat had their first competition of the season in Austin, Texas. This year for the first time we shared the water with a rowing competition. New boats and accurate start and finishing timing made this a pleasant experience. In the first race the Heat paddled with 19 paddlers and one empty seat to commemorate the passing of our beloved team mate and board member Herbert Gee. The Houston Heat showed in the three 500 m races of the day tremendous power and lots of stamina and it felt like Herb gave us a push from up above. Despite getting our dragon tail ‘kissed’ in the second race, we had something extra for the final. A very impressive 2.12.60 was the result. A big congrats to all the Houston Heaters! Thanks to the Austin Coolers for hosting us and organizing this fun event. Thanks to coach Albert & Lex to put us on the right path. Thanks to Ann and Mary for organizing.
The day after (May 1st) was a very special day, because the downtown courthouse was renamed Herbert W. Gee Municipal Courts after our beloved team mate and board member, the late honorable Judge Herbert W. Gee.
Last weekend was the May festival and again the Heat was heating things up. Fighting for big results against a very impressive ConocoPhillips the Heat again was part of a collision in race three. This time it happened half way during the race. Coach and steersman Jeff quickly told everybody to hold to straighten the boat and very impressively the Heat continued on to even win the race! (check the HH Youtube soon for video) The organization immediately told the teams involved to Re-Race and Houston Heat won this race convincingly. The final against the Houston Astro’s and ConocoPhillips resulted again in a win for the Houston Heat. Congrats to all, for that second gold medal within seven days! Thanks to Coach Loc and Coach Jeff to lead the team to victory! Thanks Margaret for organizing! Also a big cheer to Coach Albert and Ann (and many others of our team), who again dedicated their time and efforts to enrich the lives of the members of the Blind Fury, who participated very admirably in this fun event.
